A friendly reminder from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to all residents, property owners, and businesses: shoveling snow onto roads is not only dangerous but also illegal!
As heavy snowfall continues across the region, it's crucial to understand the potential hazards of depositing snow onto the roadway. The Ontario Highway Traffic Act, Section 181, clearly states that written permission from the Ministry or the responsible road authority is required before anyone can deposit snow or ice on a road.
But here's where it gets controversial... Individuals who ignore this law may face charges under Section 214(1) of the Highway Traffic Act, resulting in fines ranging from $60 to a whopping $1,000.
So, why is this such a big deal? Well, snow piles can obstruct drivers' and pedestrians' sightlines, creating dangerous icy patches and interfering with essential snowplow operations. These hazards significantly increase the risk of collisions and compromise the safety of everyone on the road.
The OPP understands the challenges residents face, especially in areas with limited space for snow storage. However, using the roadway as a dumping ground for snow is simply not a safe or acceptable solution.
Instead, residents are encouraged to utilize designated areas on their own property and follow local municipal guidelines for proper snow removal. By doing so, we can all play our part in keeping our roads safe this winter.
Proper snow management not only supports efficient road maintenance but also ensures safer travel for all road users.
For more information on local bylaws and winter safety practices, be sure to visit your municipality's website or reach out to your local OPP detachment.
Let's work together to keep our communities safe and our roads clear this winter season!
