Baseball: A Lifelong Companion and a Dream Come True
Baseball, the game that never fails to bring a smile to my face, has been a constant companion throughout my life. From the backyard games of my childhood to the professional leagues, baseball has shaped my passions and defined my favorite seasons.
For me, baseball is more than just a sport; it's a way of life. It's the sound of the bat cracking, the pop of the glove, and the walk-up songs that signal the return of longer, warmer days. It's a game that feels like home, and I'm thrilled to share my journey as a sports journalist covering this beloved sport.
But here's where it gets controversial... I, a die-hard Pittsburgh native, have found solace in covering baseball at the college level, specifically Tennessee baseball. Despite my unwavering loyalty to the Pirates, there's something special about the college game that has captured my heart.
Last season marked my inaugural coverage of Tennessee baseball, and it quickly became my favorite sport to write about. With Paul Skenes dominating the mound and Liam Doyle rolling through the SEC, it was an electric season. I even dragged my sports editor to Truist Park to witness the Bucs' final loss to the Braves in 2025. Baseball has a way of bringing people together, and I'm grateful for the memories and experiences it has afforded me.
And this is the part most people miss... Covering sports is not just about the games; it's about the people and the stories behind them. I'll never forget covering Tony Vitello's historic move from the Vols to the managerial position with the San Francisco Giants. Attending one of his final practices and witnessing him say goodbye to the Tennessee faithful was an exhilarating experience, a true highlight of my student media career.
My dream job is to cover baseball for a living, and I'm fortunate to be pursuing this passion as an assistant sports editor at the Beacon. As a junior majoring in sports journalism, I'm excited to help mentor young writers and guide them on a path that has brought me so much joy and fulfillment. Whether I'm writing along the Tennessee River or enjoying a cold IC Light on the shores of the Allegheny, I'm in my happy place, doing what I love.
Welcome back, baseball. I missed you more than I can express.
