The story of Brandon Williamson's journey with the Cincinnati Reds has been a rollercoaster, but now, he's ready to write a new chapter.
The Battle Against Injury: A Pitcher's Resilience
Brandon's left shoulder has been a persistent challenge, impacting his performance and even his career trajectory. In 2022, he was a top prospect, but his shoulder issues led to a disappointing season. He adapted his pitching style in 2023, becoming the Reds' most consistent pitcher, but the shoulder problems persisted, keeping him out for most of 2024 and ultimately leading to an elbow injury that sidelined him for the entire 2025 season.
"The shoulder pain affected my elbow, and I couldn't ignore it anymore," Brandon reflects. "It was a tough realization, but now I'm determined to come back stronger."
A New Beginning: Healthy and Hungry
As we enter 2026, Brandon is fully recovered and eager to prove himself. He's a strong contender for the fifth spot in the rotation, and with MLB's emphasis on starting pitching depth, his chances are high.
"I'm excited to show a different side of my pitching this year," he says. "My arm is in a much better place, and I can finally unleash my full potential."
Since his last appearance in the big leagues in 2023, Brandon has been focused on rehabilitation. "We left no stone unturned in my recovery," he explains. "My shoulder and elbow are stronger, and I feel confident going into this season."
The Evolution of a Pitcher: Adapting and Improving
In 2023, Brandon relied on a cutter-slider combo, but with his improved health, he's ready to showcase a more diverse arsenal. His velocity has increased, and he's now able to pitch in different ways, setting up hitters with his fastball and finishing them off with his off-speed pitches.
"I've learned a lot about the art of pitching while dealing with injuries," Brandon shares. "Now, with a healthy arm, I can combine my experience with my improved strength and pitchability."
He's also worked on his mechanics, finding ways to generate more rotational force and increase his velocity.
"I'm excited to bring my A-game back to the mound," he adds. "I've adapted, and I'm ready for the challenge."
A Second Chance: Embracing Competition
After missing nearly two seasons, Brandon is grateful for the opportunity to compete again. It's a chance to showcase his growth and prove his worth.
"I'm young, and I've worked hard," Brandon says with a smile. "I'm ready to embrace this chance and enjoy every moment of it."
Terry Francona, the Reds' manager, encourages Brandon to make the most of this opportunity. "You only get one chance to be young and compete at this level," he says. "Embrace it and enjoy the ride."
