The Steelers are reportedly counting on Aaron Rodgers to be their quarterback, but it's not a done deal just yet.
The future Hall of Famer is a strong possibility to join the team, according to Steelers beat reporter Mark Kaboly. However, Kaboly emphasizes that Rodgers' decision to continue playing is still uncertain.
"I think he will be their starting quarterback unless he makes a firm decision in the next month that he's done with football entirely," Kaboly stated, hinting at Rodgers' potential return without explicitly confirming it. Kaboly's sources suggest the Steelers believe Rodgers still wants to play, which could be a significant factor in their expectations.
Rodgers, 42, has been in communication with Mike McCarthy, the newly appointed head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. McCarthy, who has spoken with Rodgers multiple times, believes it's normal for players to take a break after a long career. He also expressed his willingness to have Rodgers as his signal-caller for a 23rd season in the league.
"I have spoken to Aaron Rodgers a number of times," McCarthy said. "It's important for players to decompress and step away after the season, and that's the mindset he's in."
Despite the positive signs, Rodgers has not made any definitive statements about his future. After the Steelers' elimination in the wild-card round, Rodgers remained non-committal about retirement. He stated, "I'm not going to make any emotional decisions." This leaves the door open for a potential return, as the Steelers eagerly await his decision.
